The journey will pass through coconut plantations and remote villages. In general, Kudat is located some 3 hours to the north of Kota Kinabalu. The first stop will be at Gombizau village, Bee Farm. For many generations, the people of Kampung Gombizau has been consuming raw honey as it is believed and has been proven to possess remedial properties; other than being able to lend its superior taste to food when used in cooking. The next stop at Sumangkap village is a “Gong Making Village”, the gong is the most important Rungus musical instrument which is played during festivities and grand occasions such as weddings. We proceed to Bavanggazo Rungus longhouse for lunch, here we may experience their cultural dance performance while having your local cuisine.
Simpang Mengayau literally means the ‘wandering crossroad promontory’. It is a headland at the end of a wide bay about 40 km to the north of the town of Kudat. The famous explorer Ferdinand Magellan is believed to have landed there and stayed for 42 days during his round-the-world voyage. That took place somewhere between 1519 when the expedition left Spain, and 1521, when Magellan was killed by the natives in Cebu, Philippines. Relax on some of the most beautiful beaches you’ll ever see, and if you are a diver you will find the area not only intriguing for its marine life, but also for the treasure trove of ancient wrecks that can be found in the north of Sabah.
