Kota Belud is a town located in the West Coast Division of the state of Sabah, Malaysia. It is located roughly at the midpoint of the federal highway connecting the state capital, Kota Kinabalu, and Kudat, near the northern tip of Sabah.The town is considered the unofficial capital and gateway to the heartland of the Bajau people. It is also noted for its open air market, or tamu, which is held every Sunday. Once a year, the tamu is held on a much larger scale. During this time, it is known as the Tamu Besar or Grand Market.

A visit to Sabah would not be complete if you failed to visit their open market. This is among the most famous weekend markets in Malaysia, mainly due to its cultural value. The market is only opened every Sunday. It is like you are in a place where you can find something exotic and really unexpected. This weekly market is a kaleidoscope of sights, sounds and smells as traders gather here to sell their product. From leafy greens to delicious local cakes, vendors proudly display their goods, enticing passersby with bargains. Once a year, Kota Belud hosts the Tamu Besar annual event where people flock to this quaint district to join in the festival. Tamu Besar which means Big Market is literally the biggest tamu organised throughout Sabah. Traders from all tribes such as the Bajau, the Dusun and the Irranun as well as Obian Muslim and Chinese traders congregate here every week to offer a huge array of goods such as craftwork, mountain-grown vegetables, wild orchids, chilli-laced dried fish, succulent tropical fruits, livestock and edible seaweed. It is as much a social event as it is a weekend market. It is a time when traders come out in full force with their best goods and the local residents highlight the colourful cultures of Kota Belud. The market is predominantly organized by the indigenous ethnic Bajau Tribe, also usually known as “Cowboys of the East” because of their skills in riding horses.
