INTRODUCTION:

For your reference, the 2D1N Sepilok and Kinabatangan River Sandakan tour starts with a visit to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. The Sabah Government built and completed the center between 1961 and 1964. The center’s mission is to help orphaned orangutans return to the wild. Upon arrival, each orangutan receives a health check and goes through a quarantine period. Afterward, they move to the ‘Nursery,’ where they learn essential jungle survival skills. Later, they transition to the ‘Outdoor Nursery’ for more freedom.

As a result, many orangutans successfully adapt to the wild and integrate into their natural habitat. The center is open every day from 9 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 4 pm. On Fridays, the hours are extended from 9 am to 11 am and 2 pm to 4 pm.

FULL ITINERARY

DAY 1~ Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre

First, our guide will meet you at Sandakan Airport or your hotel. Then, we will take you to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre for the 10:00 AM feeding session. Please remember that visitors cannot touch the orangutans, so kindly respect this rule. Afterward, we will watch a 20-minute video about the nursery at 11:00 AM. Then, we will have lunch at a nearby restaurant.

After lunch, we will drive for about 1 hour and 45 minutes to Bilit, Kinabatangan. Once we arrive, we will take you by boat to your lodge, just a 3-minute ride away. You will have some free time before the 4:00 PM boat cruise. On the cruise, you can look for wildlife along the Kinabatangan River.

Day 2~ Kinabatangan River Cruise

Next, you’ll begin your day with the gentle sounds of birds and gibbons at dawn. Furthermore, this peaceful wake-up call marks the start of your adventure. At 6:00 AM, we embark on a one-hour morning cruise along the Kinabatangan River. Then, during the cruise, keep an eye out for wildlife such as proboscis monkeys, orangutans, and colorful birds, all searching for their breakfast. As well, early mornings are the best time to spot these animals in action.

After the cruise, we’ll return to your lodge for a hearty breakfast. Besides, this is your time to relax and enjoy the surroundings. At 9:00 AM, we’ll head to the famous Gomantong Caves, known for bird nest harvesting. Also, the tour lasts about one hour, and you’ll walk through the caves while learning about their fascinating history and significance.

Afterward, we’ll return to Sandakan for a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. Then, we’ll set off on a city tour, visiting key landmarks like the Puu Jih Shih Temple, the WW2 Memorial Park, St. Michael’s Church, and Agnes Keith’s House. You’ll also have time to explore the central market and soak in the local culture.

Finally, we’ll transfer you to your hotel or Sandakan Airport, marking the end of your 2D1N Sepilok and Kinabatangan River Sandakan adventure.
